SPECIAL2 Representative of environment designing E.M.I. PROJECT Landscape designe Emiko Futami

Making Osaka into a charming city through landscaping

Struggling as a pioneer in landscape design
It was a continuous battle for Futami, who mastered landscaping in U.K. and U.S.A, after she established the environment design office E.M.I. PROJECT.
The idea of "environment design" was non-existent back then. The office was opened in the modern-built Semba Building, lacking unity in its door colors, and with bicycles and automatic vending machines jumbled together in the courtyard. She brought back the image of the Taisho era to such a building, giving it unity in appearance and built a rooftop garden. As the idea of urban design took root, "landscapes with more warmth" became the theme, and she designed various landscaping projects.
Though public interest in the environment is improving, Futami says "There are few places for adults to enjoy strolling in Osaka". Her battle goes on still.

A charming city, not limited to antiques
I want to introduce Oimatsu dori. It is popular for having the best antique shops in Osaka, but I am planning with my partners to make it a more enjoyable town for adults to take strolls. I acquired an old building, and I am planning to fill its gallery and walls with greenery and make a rooftop garden.
