Nippombashi, sacred ground of Otaku culture in western Japan

Nippombashi is the sacred ground of Otaku culture, representing western Japan. Shops specializing in animation, games, robots, and model trains in addition to ‘Maid Cafes’ line the streets, ever bustling with Otaku people. It is also popular among tourists from abroad. You can hear English, Chinese and Korean being exchanged in the shops. Japanese Otaku culture is drawing attention from the world. In Nippombashi we think you will experience a different kind of charm from that to be found in Tokyo’s Akihabara.

SPECIAL2 President, Oguraya Yamamoto Corporation Mr. Hiroshi Yamamoto

A monument to preserve the history of kombu kelp and the “Kodai Suzume Sushi” of the long-established sushi shop Sushiman

organic buildingOguraya Yamamoto was established in 1848. Mr. Hiroshi Yamamoto is the 4th president of this long-established shop with a proud history of over 160 years. He believes cherishing things now would build a new tradition, and makes efforts to develop new products. His creativity is shown in the ‘organic building’. It was built when they were rebuilding the headquarters under the theme of “at least make it interesting if we are rebuilding at all”. It fits the concept of the company policy which is coexistence with nature. There are 132 pot plants of various shapes and sizes attached to the wall. Even the people of Osaka were surprised at first, but it is now a popular spot in Minami Semba.

The unknown “Eidai Beach monument” and famous “Kodai Suzume Sushi”

Eidai Beach monumentKombu kelp product is one of the Osaka specialties however, its origin is Hokkaido. It was originally brought from Hokkaido to Eidai Beach (currently Kusunaga shrine in Utsubo Park) in the Edo era. The 100th anniversary of the time kombu was first brought to Osaka was celebrated in 2001. The Osaka Kombu Association of Commerce and Industry built a stone monument on the old Eidai beach site, but it is unknown outside the group. So we are taking this opportunity to introduce it to you.
Kodai sushiAnother thing we want to introduce is Kodai Suzume Sushi Sushiman. It is one of the oldest shops in Osaka, established in 1653. The renowned Kodai Suzume Sushi began when it was made for Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1781, using a small red snapper. The preparation method remains unchanged today. It is not very flashy but the simple taste is out of this world. It is great to take home from a trip because it tastes better if eaten after maturing for a while?
