SPECIAL2 PATISSIER Mr. Peter John Broadhurst

Serial Column vol.5 Attracted by the old Japanese culture

From the U.K. His opportunity to visit Japan came after marrying a Japanese woman in 1998. Opened his first cake shop “Broadhurst’s” in Tamatsukuri in 2002. He opened a chocolate specialty shop “TIKAL by Cacao en Masse” last year. It will be followed by his third shop planned to open this winter.

●Broadhurst

Surprised by Mizukake Fudo in Hozenji

TIKAL is in the Shibakawa Building which was constructed in 1927. I don’t know about Japan in those days, still it is wonderful that old things can be preserved. The theme of this room is ancient Central and South America. I feel the essence of the ancient Mayan culture here and there. Talk of the Maya people reminds me of cacao beans, home of chocolate. I fell in love at the first sight of the floor looking as if it were covered with chocolate bars. Please take a look at the decoration when you shop here. At TIKAL, our chocolate is made without blending the cacao beans. So please enjoy the variety of tastes coming from the beans. I would like a little PR here.

●Shibakawa Build
(Japanese only)

I recommend Hozenji where I always take my acquaintances from the U.K. I tell them to pour water and press hands for prayer. They are all surprised at the statues covered with moss! I also like the atmosphere in the alley. Another recommended spot is Kuromon Ichiba (market). I used to imagine that Japanese folk were all “quiet and gentle”, so where does the energy of this market come from!? I feel energized just by walking about there.
